Knockout (Single Elimination)
In knockout format, teams are eliminated after one loss. Winners advance, losers go home. A 16-team tournament has 15 matches and 4 rounds. It's fast, exciting, and creates clear winners - but one bad game ends your tournament.
Round-Robin (League)
Every team plays every other team. A 16-team round-robin has 120 matches! Points are awarded for wins and draws. Most fair format since every team gets equal opponents, but takes the longest.
Groups + Knockout (World Cup Style)
Teams are divided into groups for round-robin play. Top teams from each group advance to knockout rounds. Combines guaranteed matches with knockout excitement. FIFA World Cup uses 8 groups of 4, top 2 advance.
When to Use Each Format
Knockout: Limited time, want excitement. Round-robin: Fairness is critical, have plenty of time. Groups + Knockout: Want guaranteed games AND knockout drama. Most grassroots tournaments use knockout or groups + knockout.
Match Count Comparison
For 16 teams: Knockout = 15 matches. Round-robin = 120 matches. Groups (4x4) + Knockout = 24 group + 7 knockout = 31 matches. Choose based on your available time.
